Four more of Henry's books are set to get adaptations of their own

Funny Story and Happy Place are also headed to Netflix

The first Emily Henry novel to be adapted for the screen, People We Meet on Vacation, is finally here — but there are still plenty more on the way.

Five of the bestselling author’s titles have been picked up for film adaptations. In 2022, 3000 Pictures announced that it would adapt her 2021 novel People We Meet on Vacation, per Deadline. Henry confirmed the news on her Instagram with the caption, “how’s everyone’s Tuesday.”

While People We Meet on Vacation was still in production, four more of Henry’s novels were picked up for adaptations. In August 2023, the author shared that she was “feeling sentimental” about all the love her books had received.

“Feeling grateful for my beautiful life,” she captioned a series of photos. “Feeling warm and fuzzy about my readers and their funny comments and heartfelt messages and cute videos and thought provoking reviews. It is so scary and strange to be seen, but it is also so special, this weird and beautiful thing we have going on here.”

So, which Emily Henry books are being adapted? Here’s everything to know about her upcoming film projects.

Brett Haley directed the Netflix film adaptation of People We Meet on Vacation from Yulin Kuang’s screenplay.

Based on The New York Times bestselling novel, People We Meet on Vacation follows polar opposites Alex and Poppy, who attempt to revive their annual vacation (and friendship) with one last trip together. Deadline reported in August 2024 that Tom Blyth and Emily Bader were cast as Alex and Poppy, respectively.

In a video Netflix shared on X that featured Haley telling the actors they had gotten the parts, Henry told them that she was “an anxious wreck” during the casting process.

“I just truly could not feel any more confident that my readers and then so many more people who don't even know about the book are going to completely, completely fall in love with Poppy and Alex, with you guys playing them,” the author told Blyth and Bader.

The rest of the ensemble cast includes Sarah Catherine Hook, Jameela Jamil, Lucien Laviscount, Lukas Gage, Miles Heizer, Tommy Do, Alice Lee, Alan Ruck and Molly Shannon.

The movie began streaming on Netflix on Jan. 9.

In March 2023, Deadline reported that Tango had picked up a film adaptation of Henry’s 2022 novel Book Lovers, which follows a literary agent named Nora who reluctantly agrees to spend a holiday with her sister in a small town where she keeps running into Charlie, a brooding book editor.

Per the synopsis, “it would be a meet-cute if not for the fact that they’ve met many times and it’s never been cute.”

Sarah Heyward, who is best known for writing on Girls, will pen a screen adaptation of Book Lovers, but the cast and directors have yet to be announced. When sharing about the adaptation on Instagram, Henry wrote that the movie will be “funny, cozy, moving, and messy” and that she “can’t wait” for it to come to life.

In April 2023, Deadline reported that Beach Read would be adapted into a film for 20th Century Studios, and that Kuang would both write the screenplay and direct. Henry shared the news on her Instagram, asking her followers, “who’s ready to cry?”

The novel follows two authors, January Andrews and Augustus Everett, who unexpectedly become neighbors while on isolated writing retreats on Lake Michigan. They strike a deal to swap genres — his literary drama for her love stories — in an attempt to break through their respective writers’ blocks.

Deadline reported in June 2024 that Jennifer Lopez's production company, Nuyorican Productions, would adapt Henry’s 2023 novel Happy Place for a Netflix series. The actress confirmed the news on her Instagram Stories and wrote that she couldn't wait to work with the author.

The novel follows former couple Harriet and Wyn, who pretend to be together for one last summer spent with their friends at a beach house in Maine.

In January 2026, Variety reported that Happy Place would now be shifting to a film rather than a TV series, and is still set to premiere on Netflix.

Funny Story

Three months after her 2024 novel Funny Story debuted, Henry announced on her Instagram that she was writing a screenplay adaptation for Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company.

The novel follows children’s librarian Daphne after her fiancé, Peter, dumps her for his childhood best friend, Petra. Forced out of her living situation, Daphne crashes with Petra’s ex-boyfriend, Miles, and together, they concoct a fake dating scheme to make their exes jealous.

Funny Story's cast and directors have yet to be announced, but in January 2026, Variety revealed that the movie will stream on Netflix when it premieres.
