As she gears up to release her second studio album, A*Pop (out July 24), Tyla is only amping up her fashion.
Last night, the South African pop star attended the Billboard Women in Music Awards in Hollywood, California, where she made a spiky statement in a skin-baring, two-piece set from Cuban-Spanish designer Javier Collazo. On the brand’s official Instagram, the eponymous creative director teased the look by writing: “The modern woman unleashes the animal within to take on the big city.” (The line comes from The Devil Wears Prada—a scene where Nigel explains the theme of a fashion shoot to Andy.)

Styled by Katie Qian, Tyla’s look could be described as prehistoric chic, as it pulled cavewoman codes straight into the 21st century. Constructed entirely of feathers in hints of brown, white, black, and gray, the set brought an untamed, indeed wild energy to the glitzy red-carpet affair.

All around, the plumes curved out from the dress like spikes, as if to warn passersby not to get too close. They formed a handkerchief-style halter top and a matching asymmetrical maxi skirt, which left one of Tyla’s legs bare while swirling around the other side to eventually form a slight train that brushed the ground.

For a Y2K touch, the “Chanel” singer stuck a few gemstones onto her side, arranging them in a tight pattern that trailed up her hip like a constellation. Finally, she accessorized with a couple of statement bangles and a pair of PVC sandal heels, while leaving her hair hanging down in luscious curls.

In just a short amount of time, Tyla has proven herself to be an unstoppable force on the red carpet, playing with texture, form, and references in a way that feels totally fresh. As she continues to strengthen that stylistic legacy, I feel lucky just to witness it in real time.
