Fire officials in Texas are celebrating the actions of two young sisters who saw their neighbors’ home on fire overnight and raised the alarm, giving the occupants enough time to escape.
The South Montgomery County Fire Department said in a social media post that the blaze occurred in the early morning hours of Monday, Aug. 17.
Firefighters were summoned to a residential structure fire in Oak Ridge North with a preliminary report that occupants of the home were still inside.
According to the department, sisters Ava, 5, and Mia, 9, awoke and saw the fire coming from their neighbors’ home.
“It sounded like if you were up close to a microwave and popcorn in it was popping,” Mia later recalled to CBS affiliate KHOU.
“It was so big it was almost close to our house,” Ava added of witnessing the blaze.
The girls immediately told their mother, who in turn contacted the neighbors, granting them necessary time to flee.
“Because of their courage and quick actions, the occupants were able to get out,” the department said.

Officials said that firefighters experienced heavy fire conditions from the garage and extinguished the blaze there, resulting in no reported injuries.
In an interview with KHOU, South Montgomery County Fire Department Assistant Chief Adam Moore said that the home’s occupants — a couple and their infant child — were asleep at the time of the fire and unaware of what was happening, despite working fire detectors. He added that the fire spread from the garage to a breezeway in the attic.
“This could’ve been tragic,” Moore told the outlet.
Mia also told KHOU that she prayed while watching from her house, hoping that her neighbors “get out safely and no one was injured.”

“We are especially proud to recognize Ava and Mia for their bravery, awareness, and quick thinking,” the department said in its social media post. “At just 5 and 9 years old, their actions made a tremendous difference and serve as an important reminder of why knowing what to do when you see or hear signs of a fire can save lives.”
