Sandra Bullock appeared on the latest episode of the ā€œSmartLessā€ podcast.

She opened up about her late partner Bryan Randall’s ALS battle for the first time.

Randall passed away at the age of 57 in 2023.

Three years after the tragic death of her partner Bryan Randall, Sandra Bullock is opening up about his battle with ALS. In a new interview, the actress explained why she kept his diagnosis private.

ā€œHe asked me not to share,ā€ she said on the ā€œSmartLessā€ podcast this week. ā€œI know why he asked me not to.ā€

Bullock admitted that this request ā€œisolated [her] in the process,ā€ as few people were privy to what her family was going through. She raised her two adopted children, Louis and Laila, with Randall, who died at the age of 57.

ā€œMy sister was the only one who knew for a while,ā€ Bullock, 62, shared. ā€œAt first I go, ā€˜Oh, I can handle that. I can be quiet. I don’t wanna harm others because of what I do. So I think not talking for a while was good.ā€

It eventually became harder for her keep her feelings a secret, as managing Randall’s symptoms and raising two children during the COVID-19 pandemic turned into ā€œa trifecta that was pretty dark.ā€

Bullock began to lean on close friends like Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka (whose husband Jason Bateman co-hosts ā€œSmartLessā€ with Sean Hayes and Will Arnett), but she acknowledged that the grieving process began well before Randall passed away in 2023.

ā€œI think where he was in his journey, both physically and mentally, I started grieving Brian four years before he passed,ā€ Bullock said. ā€œThere was something that had shifted. It is a traumatic diagnosis.ā€

ā€œMy person left a lot earlier than the body left,ā€ Bullock continued. ā€œI don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.ā€

Bullock and Randall began dating in 2015, though they rarely discussed their relationship openly. The actress has even said that it ā€œscaredā€ him to be romantically involved with someone in the public eye.

ā€œMy life was already on track and here’s this beautiful human being who doesn’t want anything to do with my life, but is the right human being to be there,ā€ Bullock said on ā€œRed Table Talkā€ in 2021.
