Sandra Bullock opened up about her late partner, Bryan Randall, three years after his death.
Randall died in August 2023 after a battle with ALS.
Bullock said the diagnosis was ātraumaticā and that her person āleft a lot earlier than the body left.ā
Sandra Bullock is opening up about the grief sheās faced for years as she dealt with the ātraumatic diagnosisā and death of her longtime partner, Bryan Randall.
The Practical Magic 2 star recently sat down with the SmartLess podcast and opened up about Randallās death in August 2023 following a three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. He was 57.
The pair was together from 2015 until his death, and privately faced his ALS diagnosis together. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrigās disease, is a rare and fatal nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Bullock explained to SmartLess hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett that the diagnosis was ātraumatic,ā and Randall asked her and his family to keep his battle with the disease a secret from the public.
āHe asked me not to share. I know why he asked me not to,ā the Oscar winner said, according to Page Six who listened to the episode currently available to SiriusXM early access subscribers. (The episode will be released on Aug. 24.)
āI wasnāt allowed to speak about it. That was the request,ā she added, according to SiriusXM. āI wasnāt even allowed to tell Amanda [Anka, Batemanās wife]. I wasnāt allowed to tell anybody. My sister [Gesine Bullock-Prado] was the only one who knew for a while.ā
Bullock recalled how isolating the secrecy was as she cared for Randall amid the COVID-19 pandemic while helping her childrenāLouis and Laila, and Randallās daughter, Skylarāprocess his declining health. She said it became āa trifecta that was pretty dark.ā
Once Bullock was able to confide in friends like Anka and Jennifer Aniston, she had already begun to accept the fact that Randall wasnāt going to survive his health battle.

āI think where he was in his journey, both physically and mentally, I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,ā Bullock shared. āThere was something that had shifted.ā
She continued, āMy person left a lot earlier than the body left. I donāt think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because youāre just on this treadmill.ā

At the time of his death, Randallās family shared a touching statement with Entertainment Weekly.
āBryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private, and those of us who cared for him did our best to honor his request,ā the statement read. āWe are immensely grateful to the tireless doctors who navigated the landscape of this illness with us and to the astounding nurses who became our roommates, often sacrificing their own families to be with ours.ā

The photographerās family added, āAt this time we ask for privacy to grieve and to come to terms with the impossibility of saying goodbye to Bryan.ā
Bullock first met Randall when he photographed her son Louisā birthday in January 2015. They took their relationship more public later that year, including an appearance at Jennifer Aniston and Justin Therouxās wedding.
āI found the love of my life,ā she told Red Table Talk in December 2021. āItās the best thing ever.ā
