The young royal has experimented with nail colors before, including bubblegum pink at Wimbledon

A palace insider previously told PEOPLE that Charlotte "is quite a strong character, almost wise beyond her years"

Princess Charlotte experimented with a fresh nail hue in the family portrait released for her parents' anniversary.

On April 29, Kate Middleton and Prince William released a new photo to commemorate their 15th wedding anniversary, in a shot that showed them lounging in the grass with their three children Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 8.

A close look at the image showed that Charlotte rocked a new nail color, sporting an icy blue manicure.

While Queen Elizabeth was a famous fan of neutral nails and loyal to Essie's sheer pink "Ballet Slippers" shade, there's no official rules around nail polish colors for women in the British royal family.

Princess Charlotte previously sported a bubblegum pink manicure to Wimbledon in July 2024, where the color was clear as she clapped and reacted during the tennis championship.

Princess Charlotte follows the lead of her mom, Princess Kate, in experimenting with fun nail colors.

While the Princess of Wales, 44, has made sheer nails her style signature and often skipped polish for public appearances in recent years, she has played around with color before.

For the royal family's Easter church outing in April 2023, Princess Kate sported a bright red manicure in an unexpected style surprise.

Princess Charlotte will celebrate her birthday this weekend and turn 11 on Saturday, May 2.

PEOPLE explored the making of the modern princess in an exclusive cover story last year, where a palace insider commented, "She is quite a strong character, almost wise beyond her years."

Charlotte is known to hold her own at royal events and her public appearances often capture her polish and poise.

“It’s truly her personality — it’s not forced,” says childrenswear designer Amaia Arrieta, who has met her several times. “She looks very confident and at ease with herself and the environment she’s in. The maturity that comes with that responsibility — she seems to nail it every time.”
