Macaulay Culkin said on the Dec. 29 episode of the SmartLess podcast he has to "gird" himself for public outings — and shared three rules he has for fans who want to approach him

“I just realized that I'm in charge of the social contract,” said Culkin. “I'm in charge of the interaction"

Macaulay Culkin has set some firm boundaries when it comes to his fans.

During an interview on the Dec. 29 episode of the SmartLess podcast, the Home Alone actor, 45, talked with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett about his superstardom at a young age and how he remains recognizable to countless people.

After Hayes asked him how he handles going out in public, Culkin — who shares two children, Dakota, 4, and Carson, 3, with fiancé Brenda Song, 37 — said he gets into a certain mindset.

“I definitely have to gird myself… for, you know, outings and so forth. I just set certain ground rules for myself,” he said.

“Don't approach me when I'm at the dinner table. I don't like that. You know? Don't approach me when I'm with my kids. Definitely don't follow me to the bathroom,” he continued.

“I just realized that I'm in charge of the social contract,” said Culkin. “I'm in charge of the interaction.”

Earlier in the episode, Culkin — who starred in movies like Uncle Buck before 1990’s Home Alone launched him to a stratospheric level of fame — discussed how it was “tricky” to be so well-known at such a young age.

“It was a difficult, tricky waters to maneuver through and stuff like that because you don't necessarily have the actual or emotional vocabulary to really kind of, you know, maneuver through those waters,” he said.

"And I always kinda thought of myself as a peerless person. Like, I couldn't turn left and right, like, know, like, and go, ‘Oh, you're like me.’ ... It was a it was a very unique experience,” he added.

“I kinda had to... just figure it out on my own for …a big chunk of it,” said Culkin, who stopped acting for a 10-year period when he was around 14 so he could have a more normal life.

“I was doneskis,” he said of walking away. “I was like, ‘I hope you all made your money because there's no more coming from me.’”

“I made my name. I made my mark. I made my fortune. The only reason why I even do it now is because I like to do it,” he added.

Culkin voiced a character in the recent Zootopia 2 movie and appears in Season 2 of the Prime Video series Fallout. And yet, he said he’s “technically” retired right now. “Like, I retire, and then if I find something I like, I unretire, do that, and I immediately retire afterward. Every gig is my last."
