The speech was widely interpreted as her coming out of the closet, but Foster said in a new interview that she wanted the speech to be 'literary' and opaque on purpose

Jodie Foster is looking back at one of her major moments in Hollywood.
The two-time Oscar winner opens up about her life and career in a Jan. 7 interview in Variety. In it, she spoke about her acceptance speech in 2013 when she received the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes. Many interpreted her speech as her coming out of the closet, but she told Variety of people who saw it that way, âThey were confused!â
Variety noted that in her speech, she acknowledged her âheroic co-parentâ and âex-partner in love but righteous soul sister in life,â Cydney Bernard. The pair, who were together from 1993 to 2008, share two sons, Charlie and Kit. The outlet said her acknowledgement of her sexuality was âseismic,â but Foster didnât agree.

Instead, she wanted to write a speech that couldnât be so pinned down. âIt was really important that it be so literary because I knew that it would be chopped up, misinterpreted,â she told Variety. She also wanted to say it so that â20 years from now, my kids will go backâ and see what she was thinking at 50.
Part of her speech was also about privacy, and how she longed for it after starting her career as a child actor. She said in part, âBut seriously, if you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, if youâd had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe then you, too, might value privacy above all else. Privacy.â
Foster also used the speech to announce that she was taking a break from making large-scale films. Instead, she focused on directing for a good 10 years. Then in 2023 she returned to acting in a big way, with the movie Nyad and HBOâs True Detective: Night Country. They earned her an Oscar and Emmy nomination, respectively.

Fosterâs new film, A Private Life, opens Jan. 16 after premiering at Cannes in 2025. She told the outlet, âI think Iâm doing the best work of my life. And the dirty little secret is that Iâve never worked less in terms of my energy output. I just do what I think, and then I drink a coffee.â
Back in October, Foster opened up to PEOPLE about her marriage to wife Alexandra Hedison, a photographer, designer and filmmaker. They married in April 2014. Foster said she doesnât consider them a âpower couple,â and noted, "We do a lot of chatting, but it's usually about laughing about jokes or football or movies and things like that.â
"So no, I think we're both in awe of each other, so I like to hear what she's doing,â she said. âAnd probably my advice to her is just like, 'Wow, keep going.' "
In January 2025, Foster won a Golden Globe for her True Detective role and shouted out her family during her speech. "I just want to thank my family," she said. "Because Kit, my scientist son, and Charlie, my actor son who's starting his career, hopefully you understand the joy, such joy, that comes from doing really hard, meaningful, good work. So my boys, I love you, and this, of course, is for you. And the love of my life, Alex, thank you forever."
