George Clooney and his family are saying au revoir to the U.S.

The Jay Kelly star has been granted French citizenship along with his wife, Amal Alamuddin, now Amal Clooney, and their 8-year-old twins, according to government decrees issued over the weekend, and viewed by Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday.

Clooney, who was born in Kentucky, also has U.S. citizenship, which French law allows him to retain.

For fans shocked by the news, Clooney has been vocal about his appreciation for the privacy living in France has afforded him and his family. "We're very lucky. You know, we live on a farm in France," Clooney told Esquire in an October profile. "I was worried about raising our kids in L. A., in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life. France — they kind of don't give a s--- about fame. I don't want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don't want them being compared to somebody else's famous kids."

"A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it. But now, for them, it’s like — they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life," the eternal A-lister added.

In an interview with the French broadcaster RTL earlier this month, Clooney gushed about the family's farmhouse in France and the country's culture that allows them to live a quieter life away from the intense media scrutiny of American paparazzi."Here, they don't take photos of kids. There aren't any paparazzi hidden at the school gates. That's No. 1 for us," he said. "We also have a house in the United States, but our happiest place is on this farm where the kids can have fun."

According to a New York Times profile published in February, the actor also has homes in England and Kentucky, but the farm in France is the family's primary residence.

Clooney has been married to Amal, an acclaimed human rights lawyer who is British and Lebanese, since 2014. The couple welcomed their twins, Alexander and Ella, in 2017.

The family's settlement in France aligns with Clooney's recent comments about his career priorities shifting as he ages.

While on the press run for Noah Baumbach's Jay Kelly, in which he plays the central aging Hollywood legend in a bit of winking meta-fictionalism, Clooney noted that he feels no need to "compete with 25-year-old leading men" at this stage in his career. "We always look back as we get older and go, 'I wish I'd spent more time with the family.' You never go, 'I wish I spent more time working' — unless you have a really crappy family," he told Netflix, the studio behind Jay Kelly.

"I've been trying to go the route Paul Newman did: 'Okay, well, I'm not kissing a girl anymore,'" he further expanded on his reasoning in a recent interview with The Daily Mail. "When I turned 60, I had a conversation with my wife. I said, 'Look, I can still play basketball with the boys. I play with 25-year-old guys... I can still hang, I'm in shape. But in 25 years, I'm 85 years old. It doesn't matter how many granola bars you eat, that's a real number.'"
