Christopher Knight is reflecting on missing the opportunity to date his on-screen sister.

The actor behind Peter Brady on *The Brady Bunch* discussed his relationship with Eve Plumb, the actress who played his stepsister Jan on the family sitcom, after she revealed that she tried to go on a date with Knight in her new book *Happiness Included: Jan Brady and Beyond*.

"Eve was more mature than me very early [and] always had, from the earliest I can remember, her claim on me, but I wasn't there," Knight told PEOPLE. "You know, I wasn't ready to be claimed. I wasn't even aware for part of that time that it just wasn't there, right to the very end."

Knight said that he didn't realize that the feelings may have been mutual until it was too late. "And right as, all of a sudden, I'm now ready perhaps to turn around and recognize this attention and maybe give some of my own, we're off the air," he said.

"It was sweet, but it was [not] destined, and I'm glad," he added. "Because surely, you know, exes aren't somebody you normally stay very close to. So we never had a chance to be an item, to find a distance in one another."

Knight indicated that the two actors' social circles shifted upon the conclusion of *The Brady Bunch*, which ran from 1969 to 1974. "My sphere of influence and her sphere of influence ... after that changed," he said. "But she was in my sphere right up until that time. It was right at the very end."

The actor reflected, "It's like getting a kiss on two different trains right as they separate."

In her book, Plumb previously said that she ended up going on a date with Knight, who is only a few months older than her, after the conclusion of *The Brady Bunch* when they were both teenagers — but it didn't go particularly well.

"Any attempts at making out that evening ended with laughter and resignation that we'd always be sister and brother, even in real life," she wrote.

"It was sweet," the actress told Page Six. "It was fun, but we were really already by that time just too good of friends to make that transition into being romantic partners."

Plumb eventually wed business and technology consultant Ken Pace in 1995, while Knight married businesswoman Cara Kokenes in 2016.

The former costars still keep in touch. "We've stayed friends to this day," she told the outlet, noting that she and her husband hop on a monthly Zoom call with Knight and his wife. "We're due for one now."

The duo's on-screen brother, Barry Williams (who played Greg on the show), previously indicated that love was in the air on the set of *The Brady Bunch*.

"So, I dated Marcia Brady — Maureen McCormick — on and off for different times. And we had a great time together," he said on *I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! Australia* in January. "And the rest of the kids all got together, either dating or being very friendly. Bobby [Mike Lookinland] and Cindy [Susan Olsen], the two youngest, Peter and Jan, the two middle kids, and then Greg and Marcia."
